When we log into our preferred media, like YouTube, Facebook ,Instagram and snapchat etc, do we really know what is going on behind the closed doors, who is in control and who is really watching?

I know most people today would be using a large variety of these media platforms without knowing where their information and details would be going. I predominantly use the media platform, Facebook to obtain daily news and contact friends etc. The CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has the power and the control of this large international platform. However do we really know how Zuckerberg controls Facebook while maintaining it in an ethical way?

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been accused of invading privacy of users, using users data to there (Facebook’s) advantage. These media platforms already having a large amount of influence in the way that which our society communicates and connect with one another. Within the Facebook ecosystem there are apps and apps including messaging apps including WhatsApp and Messenger, to visual apps like Instagram and even Occulus(Bullas, J (n.d.)). With 66% of all millennials aged 15-34 years old using Facebook we are the most at risk at being unprotected on these media platforms risking our own personal information at being taken.

This can be proven by;

Facebook announcing that, thanks to a security “vulnerability,” hackers were able to access the personal Facebook accounts for some 50 million users (Wagner, K, 2018). And not only did this occur once, but this breach was the third security issue Facebook has had. One incident had unblocked people who some Facebook users had blocked, potentially putting users’ safety at risk. The other changed users share settings without their permission, meaning people might have shared stuff on the network with others they didn’t want to share with(Wagner, K, 2018).

All this matters because people on these media platforms not just Facebook, deserve to have the privacy while enjoying the advantages of these networks. Although these media platforms keep insisting that their sites are safe and their privacy is their priority, we still have to be apprehensive when using these sites because we never know who is controlling what we see and what we do. What do you think, should they be able to see what we do?
